King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH&RC) was named a 2019 HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award recipient for leveraging the value of health information and technology to improve outcomes. The three case studies below cover how the organization used clinical decision support tools to improve cancer and influenza screening rates and implemented a smart room to improve communication.

1. Using Clinical Decision Support Tools to Improve Cancer Screening
To address the rising risk of chronic diseases, KFSH&RC identified the need to establish evidence-based, user-friendly clinical decision support tools for cancer screening services. By introducing a health maintenance tab in their EHR, the organization was able to improve the utilization of breast and colorectal cancer screening practices and achieve significant improvements in the number of requested and performed mammograms and fecal occult blood screenings for their target population.
2. Smart Tech to Smart Care: Impacting Satisfaction and Communication While Improving Outcomes
A delay in inputting data into the EHR can compromise patient care by limiting the ability of clinical decision support tools to run with the utmost efficiency. KFSH&RC struggled with this because they had nursing workflows that still relied on paper processes. 3. Increasing Influenza Screening and Vaccination
In an effort to minimize influenza outbreaks, KFSH&RC’s family medicine governance team worked with their health IT department to develop protocol for influenza screening that would increase influenza vaccination over a four-year period.
