Our CIO Panel this year includes Samme Diaz with HCA, Thurston Smith with Swope Health, and Andrea Trillo with Advent Health. Last year, we talked with our CIO panel about leadership, the challenges they face, and how their organizations are changing to meet today's demands. This year we will evolve that discussion with our panel to understand more about how communication and decision-making happen at the executive level of our local healthcare providers.

Samme Diaz is the Chief Information Officer for the MidAmerica Division of HCA Healthcare. In this role she oversees 7 hospitals, 3 free standing ED’s, 13 urgent care centers, 83 physician clinics and 7 ambulatory surgery centers. She has been in this role for 3 years and has been with HCA Healthcare for 12 years in various leadership positions. She has a bachelor’s in Healthcare Administration and an MBA in Healthcare Management. Samme has led the MidAmerica Division in various roles including the Director of Physician Services supporting various IT systems and the Director of Technical Services, supporting all of the infrastructure. Samme moved to Kansas City from Tampa, Florida in 2018. | |
 Chief Information Officer Swope Health

Thurston Smith is the Chief Information Officer at Swope Health. Previously, he was CIO at the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center in Kansas City, and he brings expertise from roles at Truman Medical Centers; Datafile Technologies; and DST Systems Inc., all in Kansas City; and at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. A veteran of the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, Smith has also held positions as an adjunct professor with Johnson County Community College and DeVry University and is an ambassador for the National Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Dr. Smith holds a Doctorate of Health Administration from Capella University in Minneapolis; and an MBA from DeVry University, Keller Graduate School of Management, in Naperville, Ill. He received a Master of Arts in Educational Technology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Associate degree in Applied Science in Information Technology from Hamilton Business College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Computer Science from Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Miss. |

A critical care nurse by background, Andrea began working in Health IT in 2011 in nursing informatics. She is currently the Regional CIO for MidAmerica, covering 4 hospitals (plus one more in 2025) numerous clinics and urgent cares. She has a bachelors degree in nursing and one in healthcare administration, as well as a Masters in healthcare admin. She is the past president of the Greater KC HIMSS chapter. |
